Buying a Franchise

Once you have decided to purchase a franchise, what should you do next?

  • Read the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD, formerly UFOC). It describes the investment you will be making, the anticipated initial costs, your legal obligations, and the background and financial strength of the franchisor, among other things.
  • Contact current and former franchisees. Ask lots of questions, including ones to help you determine the strengths and weaknesses of the franchisor.
  • Review the franchisor's audited financial statements with an experienced business accountant. (These financial statements are contained in the FDD.) Ask your accountant to evaluate the financial strength of the franchisor, assess whether this business will help you accomplish your financial goals, and provide an estimate of how long it will take to meet those goals.
  • Consult an experienced franchise attorney. Our firm has the experience to advise you on the risks and advantages in making this substantial investment before you sign a franchise agreement.

Purchasing a franchise is a major decision. Do not sign any franchise agreement without thoroughly exploring the opportunities and obligations involved. We can help you answer these important questions:

Should I buy this franchise?

Our experienced franchise attorneys can help you evaluate the type of investment that is required of you and what your ongoing financial and other obligations will be.

What am I agreeing to?

Let our thorough and responsive franchise attorneys translate the legalese of the franchise documents into plain English so you can make informed decisions before undertaking this substantial investment of money, time, and effort. We will seek to modify negotiable agreements to make them more advantageous to you.

Whether you are interested in a home-based franchise or one that requires a separate business location, we have the skills and experience to assist you. We have helped people take advantage of franchise opportunities throughout the United States for decades. Contact our franchise lawyers today.
